Harness
o Stop! Don’t just put the new harness on your dog. Make it an easy exercise, no need to get it completely on the dog the first time. We don’t want to create a negative association with the harness. Watch how to ease your dog into it.
o Use lots of treats to create a positive association. If the dog isn’t too comfortable with wearing the harness, put it on for feeding and play time and take it off straight after. Good stuff happens when you wear your harness.
Long Line
o First and foremost, you should never use a long line on a collar, it should be on a back-clip harness. A good length for a long line is 10 metres. We use them for tracking and to teach a reliable recall without setting our dogs up for failure in the meantime. If our dogs get to practise NOT coming back, the recall will just keep getting worse or at least not better.
o What we also LOVE using the long line for is practising 'mooching' which is THE best way to explore an environment with our dogs, keep them lowly aroused and tire them out by making them use their noses.
